There are quite a few challenges when beginning turning small items! However if you can learn by doing you will be on the right path.
Adequate spindle speeds are needed as too slow is not the go. Chucking has been one of my main areas of development, along with making appropriate cutting tools.
Designing the items has also been interesting!
